The Naga

I have been to Thailand many times, and to several of the places referred to. There is a reluctant acceptance of the inevitability that it rise up once more and destroy the Babylonian city of vice, inequality and injustice, Bangkok. The story is backgrounded by the belief and sense that there is something powerful and mysterious than mankind. A western reader might see the absence of tension and rather swift time progression as simplistic, however, the story evokes the spirit of a culture more rooted in mythology, forgiveness, and spirituality. The narrative and exposition are curiously Asian in their fractured allegorical style which frequently dwells on and references human spirit and animist and buddhist beliefs. I've just finished this tale of disparate lives: an ex-monk, a painter and a big name actress coming together to save a victim of big-time pimping in Bangkok.
